Hello! Welcome back to All Hear,
The Everything List for Audio Opportunities.
If you’re new here, in this newsletter, you'll find international audio opportunities with upcoming deadlines, as well as a couple of Spotlights for initiatives that I find particularly special.
I was speaking to Danielle Desir Corbett recently who runs Grants for Creators, a brilliant newsletter featuring primarily US-based grants for a whole range of creatives. Her key piece of advice is that the perfect grant doesn’t exist, so instead of waiting for a grant that fits you perfectly, or having a narrow idea of what defines you, see if you could comfortably fit into the criteria for other opportunities. Some grants are for artists, some for journalists, some for documentarians, some for podcasters — perhaps you fit somewhere in between all of those categories. But instead of feeling too uncomfortable with a label to open yourself up to opportunities, learn how to embrace those titles and come up with an application that meets the criteria without feeling inauthentic.
This month there are some pretty brilliant audio grants and opportunities out there. Sound Fields is a new online publication asking for pitches for written pieces on the theme: What is an audio documentary? The award-winning, non-profit podcast Radio Workshop is looking for sound-rich audio documentaries that explore the lives of LGBTQIA+ youth in Africa. I love the look of the SheStories Grant too, which offers $30,000 to womxn and femme-identifying persons of colour in the U.S. for storytelling projects. And finally, RESONATE Podcast Festival is offering a $10,000 production contract to one aspiring U.S. podcaster to create a pilot with Virginia Public Media (VPM).
I also have two Spotlights this month, and one that I’m honoured to have had a role in developing.
All Hear is free and always will be, but if you would like to support me as I continue to write the newsletter and update my resource list, you can buy me a coffee, or donate to Transom.
September Spotlights
This month I’m Spotlighting Broccoli’s BUILD Grant for international audio creatives, and the Audio Production Awards (APAs) for UK-based audio professionals.
To read my Spotlights — featuring tips on applying, what each organisation is looking for, and why I think these opportunities are so great — head over to Transom.org.

More Opportunities:
International
Sound Fields Call for Pitches - Sound Fields is a new online publication and event series dedicated to the art of audio documentary, in theory and practice. Their first issue asks: What is an audio documentary? What defines audio documentary as a distinct creative practice? Who are audio documentaries for, and who gets to make them? How do we make audio documentaries? They accept either original essays (1500 words or less, $400 honorarium, editor provided) or transcribed and edited interviews or conversations ($200 honorarium). Submittors maintain all intellectual property of the pieces. Work must be in English.
The deadline is 7th September.
Entrepreneurial Journalism Creators Program (EJCP) - an opportunity for international journalism entrepreneurs to earn a 100-day online certificate from CUNY’s Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. Applicants apply to develop a journalistic project that serves a community, whether that’s a newsletter, podcast, video channel, website or any other niche news product. Participants learn to refine their product idea, serve and grow an audience, and develop a revenue portfolio to ensure the project’s sustainability. The programme involves workshops, mentorship, readings, videos, coaching sessions, case studies, projects and live discussions. The curriculum is live and recorded, allowing for learning in any timezone. The programme begins on 17th October 2023 and ends on 25th January 2024. Both independent and employed journalists can apply. The programme costs $4000 but there are scholarships available.
The deadline is 8th September, 11:59 pm ET.
CTM Radio Lab - an international call out for new works from artists in the fields of experimental music, sound art, radio art, radio dramas, and performance, to be premiered at the CTM Festival in Berlin, which will take place from the 26th January to the 4th February 2024. This year Radio Lab is focusing on live performance formats (rather than installations), and the theme is “Sustain”, specifically seeking works that engage with the “emancipatory potential of technology in music and sound art.” The pieces will also be broadcast on Deutschlandfunk Kultur’s Klangkunst station in the form of a 40-55 minute radio piece. Two commissioned works will be given €5000 each, which should cover the creation of the work, but there will be additional support for the technical and staging costs for the festival. Winners will also be offered a short residency in January 2024 to finalise their live presentation. Travel expenses to Berlin and lodging during the residency and festival period will be covered by CTM.
The deadline is 10th September, 11:59 pm CEST.

Artists may submit only one application every 24 months. It costs $30 to apply, but anyone in need of financial aid may request a fee waiver. They don’t specifically include audio journalism or sound art but they told me that this would be eligible under their literature section. Or sound art could fit within music composition. They do also have The Art of Journalism fellowship. The fellowship would run from 1st March to 31st August 2024.
