Welcome (back) to All Hear, the Everything List for Audio Opportunities.
This month there’s a few brilliant opportunities for makers who are underrepresented in different ways — those in the Global Majority, those working in a language other than English, U.K. makers who aren’t based in London. Firstly, there’s NXT Podcast Bootcamp and Fellowship Programme, a free opportunity for Southern African people to learn how to make a podcast. Next, the production company Written in Air is looking for non-English pieces for a live listening event in autumn, which will be paid anywhere between $750 and $1500. Another call out, the Radio Commons Open Call for Sonic Interventions, is seeking completed works in English, Arabic, Italian, French and Spanish on a number of themes, paying a €100 honorarium. And finally, Multitrack are looking for U.K based production companies outside of London for fully-funded placements of Multitrack Fellows, sponsored by BBC Sounds Audio Lab.
I also wanted to share this great resource made by Will Coley of radio and podcast shows which are taking freelance pitches for one-off episodes. And speaking of pitching (the most natural of segues), instead of a Spotlight this month I have decided to write about how to pitch programmes to the BBC. In my own experience and from conversations with new producers, I know that people find the process quite opaque and overwhelming, so hopefully this helps its demystification. It’s mainly aimed towards newer producers who don’t understand anything about what pitching to the BBC entails, but it’s also relevant to those with some experience who are wondering whether to become a supplier. And if you don’t know what that means, read on.
I would like to keep the industry transparent and demystified, that’s the entire point of this newsletter. If you want to support this kind of work you can buy me a coffee or donate to Transom.
