If you're new here, my name is Talia, I’m an audio producer based in London. Last year, I created a Google Doc compiling international audio resources. In this newsletter, you'll find opportunities with upcoming deadlines as well as a couple of Spotlights for the resources that I think are particularly special.

This month I’m Spotlighting JAR Audio’s Pilot Competition for Emerging Women Podcasters (international, women, emerging creators) and AIR’s New Voices (U.S., early-career, underrepresented groups).

International
SOJOWB Scholarships (Guatemela and Vietnam Programmes) - Solutions Journalism Without Borders (SOJOWB) are hosting two programmes, one in Lake Atitlan, Guatemala (10th June - 8 July) and one in Hoi An, Vietnam (16th July - 13th August). They are offering 12 scholarships to journalism students and entry-level journalists in Vietnam and Guatemala (or countries that share a border with Guatemala). Six of the scholarships are full time, on location, and six are part time and remote, depending on the applicant’s availability. During the programme successful applicants will be taught solutions journalism and will co-produce a solutions-oriented story. With the scholarship the programme is free, including accommodation and some meals but not flights. The cost for international students is $3,200. A good level of English fluency (reading and writing) is required.
The deadline is as soon as possible.
Elizabeth Neuffer Fellowship - a 7-month fellowship for women, nonbinary and gender-nonconforming journalists focused on human rights and social justice issues. Fellows spend a semester at the Center for International Studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and The Boston Globe, attending classes, seminars and events whilst pursuing independent research and gaining newsroom experience. Then fellows spend two months in New York City interning for The New York Times. Applicants must have at least three years of professional experience in journalism — this can be print, broadcast or digital, either as a staff journalist or freelancer. All nationalities are welcome but non-native English speakers must have excellent written and verbal English skills. The Fellowship does not include a salary but accommodation, airfare, travel and any necessary visas are covered, and there is a fixed monthly stipend (unspecified) to cover extra living costs.
The deadline is 23rd April, 11:59pm EST.
Quill Podcast Awards - an annual digital awards ceremony for podcasters and podcast companies, which operates through a blend of public nominations and judging. There are 18 categories, spanning general, branded and company awards. You can nominate your own podcast or others, but there is only one nomination per person. Judges select winners from the finalists. They do not specify whether non-English language podcasts are eligible.
The deadline is 24th April.
Grand Prix Nova - an international radio drama festival held in Bucharest, Romania. Works in any language are permitted, but you must provide an English translation. They accept any fictional work or sound pieces without words. There are three categories, Radio Drama (€4000 prize), Short Forms (€2000) and Binaural Drama (€2000). It is free to enter but NOTE: if you win, you (or someone from your team) must be present in Romania to accept the award, between 18th and 23th of June.
The deadline is 27th April.
The John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism - a $25,000 award for an experienced journalist whose principal audience is in the U.S. They accept broadcast radio journalism nominations. If the original reporting is in a language other than English, transcripts or subtitles in English must be provided. The application is extensive — for example, applicants must provide 5-10 examples of their work alongside up to three letters of support.
The deadline is 28th April.
Sharon Begley Science Reporting Award - a free-to-enter award for experienced journalists who have compiled a substantial body of work in science journalism. They offer a grant of at least $20,000 and mentorship to enable the winner to undertake a significant reporting project. Applicants must have at least 8–10 years of professional experience. Staff and independent journalists living and working anywhere in the world are eligible. Audio journalism is accepted.
The deadline is 30th April.
ECREA Radio and Sound Conference Call for Papers - the Radio and Sound Section (RSS) of the European Communication and Research Association (ECREA) are hosting a conference at the University of Barcelona, Spain, from 6th - 8th September. The conference will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, and paper presentations on a variety of themes to do with audio in the digital age. They are seeking international proposals for papers and panels in English. Select papers will also be published in Radio Journal: International Studies in Broadcast & Audio Media in 2o24. I believe it is unpaid.
The deadline is 30th April.
Radiophrenia Open Call - a Scottish arts radio station is looking for sound and radio works for their upcoming broadcasts beginning in August. It is unpaid. They are asking for “soundscapes, spoken word pieces, radio experiments, found sound, innovative approaches to drama and documentary, and radical and challenging new programme ideas.” It is intended primarily for existing works, but artists local to Glasgow can also propose live studio performances. Pieces can be any duration, but shorter works will be compiled into longer shows.
The deadline is 1st May.
The JAR Audio Pilot Competition for Emerging Women Podcasters - a title says a thousand words! This is a competition for emerging women podcasters. Pitch your podcast ideas to JAR and they will provide production support for a pilot episode for a selected winner. The creator retains 100% IP and can use this pilot to pitch to networks, etc. The genre is completely open. Jar will provide one creative strategy session, one marketing session, script vetting and recording, editing and mixing services. The competition is open to international applicants but the pitch and episode must be in English. NOTE: JAR “recognises an inclusive definition of womanhood.”
The deadline is 1st May.
Gotham Project Market - an opportunity for creators to showcase new work for potentially interested parties, such as distributors, financiers, production companies, festival programmers, sales and talent agents. They have an entire “Audio Series & Originals” section, in which they accept audio projects of all lengths and genres. Submitted projects cannot have been sold to any platform, studio, or website prior to participating in Gotham Week in September in New York City. Applications cost $45 for the early deadline and $60 for the final deadline. To apply you must be a member of The Gotham (the lowest tier is $40 for one year). NOTE: They don’t specify whether it’s international but the company representatives they boast are all in the U.S.
The early deadline is 4th May, 11:59pm HT (final deadline 23rd May).
The National Academies Eric and Wendy Schmidt Awards for Excellence in Science Communications - awards for science communicators, journalists, and research scientists covering complex issues such as climate change, future pandemics, human genome editing and artificial intelligence. There are 24 awards between 20 and 40k, totalling $640,000. For the journalism category there are three subcategories: Freelance Journalist, Community Journalist and Early Career Journalist (under 30 years of age or having less than 5 years of professional experience developing content for media organisations). Their accepted media includes radio segments and podcasts. International applicants are welcome but all submissions must be in English.
The deadline is 5th May.
Signal Awards - podcasting awards. Entries cost between $195 and $255 depending on deadline and branded/non-branded. Non-English work is accepted but a translation is required.
The early deadline is 12th May.
PLAYA Residency - an international residency opportunity in the Oregon Outback for those working at the intersection of art and science and whose work promotes dialogue and positive change in the environment and world. Applicants may choose a 5-, 12- or 26- day session. Residents stay in individual cabins, free of charge, but are responsible for their own travel costs and food while they are in residence. Applications cost $40.
The deadline is 31st May, 11:59pm PST.
U.S.
Uncovering Justice Stories Workshop - an all-expenses-paid 2-day workshop aimed at mid-career journalists covering juvenile justice, criminal justice and related beats. The sessions will be held on 20th - 21st June at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. Travel, lodging and workshop costs will be covered.
The deadline is as soon as possible, since they are almost full.
The Student Newsroom and Innovation Lab - an all-expenses-paid opportunity for 20 undergraduate and graduate college students to attend the 2023 Online News Association Conference between 23rd - 26th August in Philadelphia.
The deadline is 20th April.
The HBCU Academy (Black Press Cohort) - a 2-day workshop and subsequent year-long training opportunity teaching solutions journalism to members of the Black Press and journalism faculty members at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States. The Academy happens from 31st July - 1st August at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham, Alabama. Fellows receive a $7,500 stipend to complete a project during the year of coaching. During the training airfare and mileage up to $650 is covered, as well as accommodation and most meals.
The deadline is 24th April, 5pm ET.
KALW Audio Academy - a free, 9-month audio journalism course in San Francisco. It requires around a 20-hour weekly commitment, including eight hours working on their daily news show Crosscurrents (unpaid), and eight hours out in the field making your own personal stories. The programme includes weekly evening seminars taught by KALW reporters, engineers, and other special guests, as well as mentorship from Crosscurrents staff and shadowing opportunities.
The deadline is 24th April, 11:59pm PT.
Solutions Journalism Network Complicating the Narratives Fellowship (U.S. journalists) - a 12-month fellowship opportunity which helps ten U.S.-based journalists to use conflict mediation techniques in their reporting. They are looking for journalists to report on solutions to some of the nation’s most divisive issues, with communities historically misrepresented by the media. Fellows receive an honorarium of up to $5,000, proportional to project scope. Previous fellows have included audio journalists and their CTN projects have included podcasts.
The deadline is 27th April, 11:59pm EST.
The NPR Student Podcast Challenge (High School Edition) - a free-to-enter contest held by NPR for students at U.S. high schools. They’re looking for a compelling story between three and eight minutes long. They will choose winners in two categories: grades five through eight and grades nine through 12. There will also be “Best Mental Health Podcast” winners for stories specifically focused on mental health. NPR reporters will come to the winners' school and interview them for a news segment that will appear on All Things Considered or Morning Edition. See the official rules here.

The John B. Oakes Award - an award for distinguished environmental journalism in the U.S. which carries a $5,000 prize. Radio and broadcast reporting are eligible, but you must include transcripts. To submit, you must have one to five pieces of environmental reporting. Applications cost $75. Apply here.
The deadline is 29th April.
Funds for Investigative Journalism - FIJ offer grants of up to $10,000 three or four times a year for investigative journalism (they average around $5,000). All journalists can apply, but most are freelancers. Pitches for radio stories are welcome. International reporters are technically applicable but there must be a “strong U.S. angle involving American citizens, government, or business” and all stories must be published in English, in a U.S.-based media outlet.
The next deadline is 1st May.
Pineapple Street Studios Production Internship and Apprenticeship - two remote 6-month long training positions. Applicants must be authorised to work in the United States and must work from one of Audacy’s markets (Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington DC, Wisconsin). For New York based individuals the starting rate is $23/hr (elsewhere is unspecified).
The deadline is 1st May.
Altavoz Lab Environmental Fellowship - a collaborative project for early-career journalists who speak Spanish and English and are reporting from the Texas Gulf Coast at community outlets that serve Black, Indigenous, immigrant, and other communities of colour in the U.S. The focus of the reporting is environmental health, environmental justice and the impacts of the petrochemical industry on communities. Fellows receive mentorship and editorial support from Altavoz Lab and Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) and a stipend of $3,000. Reporters can be freelance or staff, so long as they have a letter confirming a commitment from an outlet to co-publish the story with EHS. They accept audio journalists.
The deadline is 1st May, 11:30pm PT.
Center for Health Journalism National Fellowship - a fellowship for U.S.-based journalists which helps reporters and their newsrooms report deeply and authoritatively on the health, welfare and well-being of children, families and communities. Applicants must have a minimum of three years of professional experience. This involves an initial week of intensive learning in Los Angeles followed by five months of professional mentorship, including online skills-building workshops. They offer between $2,000-$10,000 to support a proposed project. Applicants can be freelance or full-time, as long as they earn the majority of their income from journalism and have a confirmed assignment for their proposed projects. They allow for “multimedia elements” including audio. FAQ here.

Colorado Public Radio Max Wycisk News Fellowship for Digital Audiences - an opportunity for recent graduates and early-career journalists, including those who are migrating from other mediums. The position is full time for 12 months, from September 2023 to August 2024. The starting salary is $43,264. Fellows are expected to reside in Colorado.
The deadline is 5th May, 11:59pm MT.
Poynter Editorial Integrity and Leadership Fellowship - a 9-month fellowship for 25 public media journalists aimed at strengthening news leadership and ethical decision making. Fellows receive individual coaching, sessions from industry experts and work on a personal project. This fellowship requires an initial 1-week trip to St. Petersburg, Florida, in September and twice-monthly online workshops from then.
The deadline is 15th May.
WBUR’s Education Reporting Fellowship - a full-time, 6-month fellowship opportunity at WBUR, Boston’s NPR affiliate, beginning in July. Fellows will assist coverage of the education landscape in Greater Boston with in-depth enterprise reporting as well as daily news and stories. The salary is $5,000/month. WBUR is a hybrid newsroom that offers remote work flexibility, but the fellow will need to be based in Greater Boston or be willing to relocate there.
The deadline is 15th May.
The Leeway Transformation Award - a $15,000 grant for women and minority gender artists and cultural producers living in Greater Philadelphia who create art for social change, and have done so for the past five years.

AIR’s New Voices - a mentorship programme for U.S.-based, early-career talent in the audio industry, specifically for underrepresented groups. They provide a $1,000 stipend as well as mentorship, professional development support and structured networking sessions with leaders in the industry. You do not need to be a member of AIR to apply. NOTE: At time of publication, this opportunity hasn’t officially launched, but there will be more information in the coming days. There will also be an information session on the 10th May, 3pm - 4pm EDT, sign up here.

Kay Longcope Scholarship Award and Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award - grants for U.S.-based LGBTQ+ college students looking to pursue a career in journalism. The Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award offers $5000 tuition assistance and the Kay Longcope Scholarship Award offers up to $3000 and is specifically for a LGBTQ+ student of colour. They accept audio pieces as part of the application.
The deadline is 19th May, noon ET.
Los Angeles Public Press Calls for Pitches - the publication is looking for “creative, sound-rich audio [stories] about Los Angeles,” for an upcoming podcast. Their editorial priorities are housing, pollution and the environment, public safety and the carceral system, public health, and positive community-oriented stories, as well as local government watchdog stories. Their rates vary depending on the story, but begin at $110 per broadcast minute for pieces under ten minutes; for longer stories producers are paid $40 per hour spent. The Richard C. Longworth Media Fellowships - a fellowship for journalists in the Midwest focusing on global issues that affect Midwestern readers and viewers. They offer stipends for proposed projects of up to $20,000. Fellows can be print, broadcast, and online journalists, whether staff or freelancers.

U.K.
IRN Awards for News Radio - free-to-enter awards for U.K. commercial radio stations affiliated to Newslink and Forces Radio. However, the student category for best news or sport is open to all.
The deadline is 24th April, 5pm BST.
The Swiss Church in London Artist Residency - a 3-month artist residency from August to October for U.K.-based artists/arts organisations from all artistic disciplines. Selected residents will have access to mentoring sessions and a studio space in the Church in Covent Garden, which they must work at for a minimum of two days per week. The residency is “open to everyone of all backgrounds, faiths, genders and sexualities.” They are specifically looking for a socially inclusive project which relates to one or more aspects of the Church, such as community, faith, migration, social and political issues, or even the unique architecture of the building. They provide a stipend of £1,500. There is no expectation to produce a final piece of work but if desired successful applicants can put on an exhibition in the Church. There are a few conditions of residency, such as monthly meetings, an informal talk, a takeover of the Church’s social media and an open studio session. Apply here.

The Freelance Journalism Awards - a free-to-enter award for freelance journalists in the U.K. Winners receive £100. All entrants must be based in the U.K. but may freelance for overseas media organisations. They have a Best Broadcast Journalist award which allows for audio broadcasting, radio and podcasting, and they have many other specialist categories which allow for audio entries. They also have a Best Piece of Work by a Student or Early Career Journalist category.
The deadline is 26th April, midnight.
Arts Council England’s Developing Your Creative Practice (DYCP) Grant - a grant for individual creative and cultural practitioners in the U.K. DYCP can fund a period of research, networking, or time to create new work. They offer between £2000 - £12,000. Their accepted mediums are Music, Theatre, Dance, Visual Arts, Literature, Libraries, Combined Arts and Museums practice, none of which are specifically audio — but sound design could be considered music or combined arts, and some audio projects could fit within literature. NOTE: Before you make an application, you will need to have a validated profile on their online application portal Grantium, which may take up to 10 days so create this ASAP. They have several deadlines each year.

British Podcast Awards - a competition for British podcasts. There are 27 categories, including Rising Star Award, for people with under two years’ experience in the podcasting industry. For independents, charity podcasters or companies with under £100k turnover, the admission is £30+VAT per entry, £100k-250k is £85 + VAT and above £250k is £165 + VAT (all entry costs go up by £95 if it’s after the early bird deadline).
The early bird deadline is 27th April (final deadline 18th May).
Step into the Arts - grants for impactful, youth-led projects by artists aged 5-25 from across Scotland. They also accept applications from people aged 25-30 if they show that they are facing significant barriers to accessing the arts). There are two categories, First Steps into the Arts — for young people who have some, a little or no experience with the arts — and Next Steps into the Arts — for young people who have experience in the arts and want to improve their practice. Grants range from £100-£3000 depending on applicant experience and the size of groups applying. Guidelines here.

The Journalism Diversity Fund (JDF) - The National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) is the most recognised training scheme for journalists in the UK. The organisation offers bursaries to people from diverse backgrounds who need help funding their NCTJ training. You can only apply once you have applied for an NCTJ-accredited course. They have four application rounds a year.
The next deadline is 3rd May.
UAL Storytelling Fellowship - a 9-month workshop-based fellowship programme exploring how storytelling can lead to social change. Applicants must have the right to work in the U.K. This year’s theme is Truth and Lies. They are seeking ten participants from across industries and disciplines. Fellows are asked to come with a research question to explore, which they may choose to answer through a creative project such as an artwork, a film, a performance, a stunt, an exhibition, etc. The programme includes a five-day, in-person intensive; seven monthly evening masterclasses and twenty full-day workshops, both in person; eight online mentorship sessions; peer-to-peer reviews, socials, and a final showcase. In-person sessions will be in London. Each fellow will get a £7,500 stipend — this can be paid to a workplace to backfill the fellow if need be, there are no stipulations for how the stipend is used. The programme will run from September 2023 to June 2024.

Creative Scotland’s Open Fund for Individuals - grants of between £500 and £100,000 for freelance and self-employed creative practitioners in Scotland. This can support a period of research, development and/or delivery of a creative project for up to 24 months. Eligibility criteria here.

Europe
European Cross-Border Grants - funds for a cross-border team of at least two journalists to complete an investigative project. Most cross-border grants vary from €2,000-€14,000 per project, but there is no limit to apply for. Applicants must have at least two letters of intent from professional news outlets who are willing to publish the result of your investigation. Projects can be in any language, but the application must be in English. Although the majority of projects are print, they have supported podcast work before. The grant happens four times a year.
The next deadline is 20th April, 12pm CET.
Berliner Hörspielfestival - a radio drama festival in Berlin. They use the term “radio drama” loosely; they accept any genre, whether it’s narrative, documentary, language or sound experiments, etc. They have two upcoming competitions. First, Das Kurze Brennende Mikro (“The Short Burning Mic”), where pieces can be between 5 and 20 minutes. Then there’s Der MikroFlitzer (“The Speedster”); on the 30th April they will release a specific sentence or sound and competitors have two weeks to create a radio drama of less than 60 seconds based on the prompt. Prizes include audio equiptment. Both competitions are German-language only.
The deadline for both competitions is 14th May, midnight CEST.
Audionomia Awards - celebrating Polish non-fiction audio reportage. There are two awards: the Audionomia Award (PLN 10,000 prize) and the Audionomia Sound Design Award (PLN 5,000 prize). The awards are free to enter.
The deadline is 15th May.
The Lovies - the European sister to the international Webby Awards, recognising online excellence. They have a podcast section with 12 categories. They accept submissions in English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, and Swedish. It costs €395 per entry (€355 early bird).
The early bird deadline is 26th May.
Asia
National Arts Council Singapore Grant - grants for the creation of new works by Singaporean artists or the adaptation of old works across artistic mediums. The grant is capped at $50,000 per applicant. Projects can last up to 18 months. For the 2023 cycle, projects with strong use of digital technology are prioritised. Guidelines here.
The deadline is 12th May.
